There are a variety of different goat breeds, plenty of which have purposes which overlap. As a rule, goats are kept for milk, beef, or hair, and some are also kept as companions and work animals. All goat breeds share the features of being very hardy, curious, and perceptive, and they can be exceedingly interesting animals to have around, whatever one’s use for them could be. Goats seem to be among the oldest of trained animals, with many goat breeds coming from Africa and Central Europe. Together with sheep, goats formed the foundation of early human farming, and though goats have been trained for millenia, they can go feral pretty easily. If released into the wild, goats often go crazy within a generation, which can on occasion be a big problem, as introduced goats can cause important environmental damage. A couple of goat breeds have been developed particularly for dairy. One of the most famed dairy goat breeds is the Nubian, characterized by large, floppy ears, a mild character, and milk with unusually high butterfat, which makes cheese of a particularly top of the range.

Other dairy breeds include Saanens, Toggenburgs, La Manchas, and Oberhaslis. Many of those goat breeds are shown in competition and there are particular breed standards for folks who want to show. The most famous beef breed is perhaps the Boer goat, and the Kalahari red is another widely known beef breed.
Dairy goats may also be kept for their beef, with some breeders massacring youngsters to keep their population of male goats in order. Hair goats include both cashmere and angora goats, which have been crossed with other breeds to supply several variations like American Cashmere Goats. These goats are sheared for their particularly soft, handy hair. The midget goat is utilized for friendship in many areas, though these goats also produce helpful beef and milk. Many goat breeds are also used as working animals, to drag light carts or plows and to regulate unwelcome plants.
Establishments round the world have taken to hiring ranging crews of goat mowers, who keep plants in hand in a green way, and goats are also used to trim plants along roadsides. Because goats will eat a good range of plants, they’re perfectly fitted to this purpose, as they’ll gleefully clip everything in sight till led away to a new location.
